Destination: Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery / Location: San Simeon, California / Activity: seal watching
If you're visiting Big Sur then you have probably heard about the elephant seals in San Simeon. San Simeon is a town on the Central coast of California about halfway between L.A. and San Francisco. This is a destination for visitors from around the world to come see what we call, an elephant seal.
Today, more than 17,000 elephant seals call Piedras Blancas rookery home. They migrate thousands of miles to this beach twice a year. The best time of year to visit is in late January, late April, and late October, but visitors are welcome all year round. Signs provide on-hand information about elephant seal breeding, birthing, molting, and migrating. We happened to be visiting at a time the males were migrating and the females were molting. The males are much larger than the females and probably more exciting to look at, but it was still entertaining to observe such fascinating creatures.
Get up close to some of San Simeon's most famous residents. They're lookers!
That's amazing. I've seen seals up close in Scotland on a daily basis, but never that many animals in one place :)
ReplyDeleteFabulous post. I wanna go today (maybe I'll wait till late October to see those babies!).
