Remember how we told you I had an unexpected layover in NYC on my way to Haiti?

So you're in NEW YORK CITY, and you only have a few hours?
24 hours isn't enough - but if you only have one day to do it all, what do you decide to do?

Being first-timers to New York and all, we depended on our friend Celeste (who had studied at Columbia University and once lived in NY) to be our guide for the day. She took us to a few local spots that she frequented as a grad student back in the day, and then of course we hit up the must-see-at-least-once Times Square. I kept picturing the big ball that we grew up watching traditionally and religiously every New Years, and Times Square felt very much like downtown LAx100. We took a taxi from our hotel in Queens and ended up on the subway line all the way to lower Manhattan... or something like that :)

We did what New Yorkers do best - we walked. Walked, walked and walked - and took the subway in between. Every site was an adventure, and we spent most of our money on hot drinks to stay warm, and tons of different foods because we wanted to try it all! From New York-style pizza (is pizza not a MUST, or what?! It's a must!) We stayed out all day and night, wandering the city and eating our way through New York. It is pretty incredible how much you can spend in just a day, so expect the unexpected! Clearly, next time we'll be more prepared - but acting on a whim, ya just gotta roll with it and make your time worth while and don't flinch too much at the $ signs because ya only live once!

In a few words: LOOK UP.

It's refreshing to hear a first-timers perspective ;) Grey's Papaya, Shake Shack, Republic, Malecon... there are some D-lish places that won't break the bank. Next time.
