FREAKY FRIDAY

1/25/13

Life has been a whirlwind lately. Becoming a mother has been the most amazing thing I've ever done. Sure, traveling is awesome, and showing off a brand new pair of shoes is wonderful, but there is nothing like seeing your baby for the first time. My little Van is the sweetest boy in the world. I have never felt a love like this. He is only 10 days old, and already I have learned so much.

Recovering from a c-section and trying to take care of a newborn baby has not been easy. I will never forget my first night home from the hospital- the night my milk came in as I was sitting in bed with Van in my arms late at night. Tears streamed down my face, splashing onto his chubby cheeks. Tears from pain and exhaustion, tears from feeling totally clueless, and tears from feeling incapable already. When I looked down at my poor hungry baby he suddenly stopped crying. He looked up at me with his big beautiful baby eyes that seemed to say, "it's okay mama- we're both new at this, and you are doing the best you can." In this moment I realized this is what life is all about.

This past week my mom stayed with me to show me the ropes of motherhood. Being a new mother myself, I now have a fonder admiration for her having us triplets and three boys all under the age of six! It blows my mind what we women are capable of, even if we don't know it right away (sorry men, you know nothing).

Any mothers out there with advice or tips for a new mama would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to sharing more with you all about being a parent with travel plans, even if it is just an adventure in the neighborhood.

  1. My mom should really read this blog. She mothered nine kids...

Anyway, I don't have any advice, as I'm not a mother.

Wish you the best of luck, and you're in my prayers! Don't worry, everything will come, and you'll be a pro in no time.

    xo, Rachel

  3. Take every moment a minute at a time and write down everything you wan to remember, because as impossible as it is to believe you could ever forget the smell of his newborn hair or the sweet sounds he makes when he's sleeping, you do. It all will get easier and you'll learn together, all three of you. Pray, a lot. No mom is picture perfect. Remember that we all choose what we put out there on the internet, and we usually choose to share the good and happy moments. We all make mistakes, we all get frustrated, we all battle teething with a little less grace than we hope, we all endure long sleepless nights. It's all a part of the experience. If you ever have any questions please please call me Meg! I'll be the first to admit I don't know everything, or really much of anything. But I have picked up some tricks along the way and all mom's are in this together.

  6. I don't normally comment, but I had similar feelings about being a new parent, especially in those newborn days! I wrote up a post in my personal blog about what helped me get through those early days, and figured I'd share it here since you asked for some tips. Hope it helps! Aside from that, the best advice I was given was to rest as much as possible throughout the day, and even to nap when baby naps. I had to fight the urge to clean up or do other things around the house while baby was sleeping because then I would be so exhausted when baby was wanting to nurse during the night. This is only for a short time, and a messy house or lack of computer access is much less important than a happy, rested momma and well fed baby, right?

  11. megan he is a doll! my advice is just to soak it all in while you can. everything else can wait because that little Van is going to change so much so quickly and you will wonder where all the time went. and you will miss the time you used to have to just snuggle and love on that sweet babe. good luck!!!

  12. ohhh. I got a little teary because I can relate so well. I am no expert here...wish I had a lil secret for you but the best advice I feel like i've been given is to listen to yourself. You are HIS mama. Trust yourself. You know more than you think. Motherly intuition is a REAL thing. Love you meggie. You have a new mama club rootin for you over here. He is gorgeous.

  13. All the comments above are great advice for you Meg. One thing we women tend to do is get so swept off our feet with our new little bundle of joy, we forget about our first love: our husbands. I know it feels like SO much is on your shoulders and its all your responsibility right now, but make sure to find time to reassure your husband of your love for him...because once the kids all grow up and move out and on with their lives, its going to be just you and him together again. You don't want to be strangers, but best friends.
I'm praying for you girl. Congratulagions on such a beautiful baby.
