Whole Wheat Calzone

Country of Origin: Italy

Calzones are yummy folded pizzas similar to strombolis that originated in Italy. Usually they are in the shape of a half moon and fried, then topped with marinara sauce, garlic, and olive oil. But this is a healthier version of a classic mozzarella tomato calzone. Similar dishes to the calzone can be found in other countries, such as the empanadas of Latin America, a pasty of the UK, or the delicious well known sweet filled turnovers of the US.

 Ingredients

2 cups whole wheat flour
1 package active dry yeast
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup hot water
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 tablespoon of honey or sugar
1 small can tomato sauce
bundle of fresh basil
organic mozzarella cheese, sliced
1 cup halved cherry tomatoes
salt and pepper to taste

Directions

preheat oven to 425
in large mixing bowl combine whole wheat flour, yeast, and salt
blend in hot water, oil, and honey or sugar
stir by hand until all ingredients are combined, about 3 minutes
cover bowl with plastic wrap till rises to desired level, about 30 minutes
butter or spray a pan or cookie sheet and press risen dough onto pan
add tomato sauce and desired toppings to the center of the dough in a linear pattern
with a knife cut 10-12 slits on each side of the toppings (don't press to hard like me, i left dents)
slowly fold over each flap and wrap it up
cook for 17-20 minutes or until crust is golden brown
serve!
